Midge Miller

A new Rollator, coupled with independent living skills, have increased her confidence at home.

Sue Miller’s mother, Midge Miller, took a tumble in her home. She tripped while trying to maneuver over a too-high threshold. Thankfully, Midge did not break any bones or require hospitalization; but Sue was on high alert from the incident. She thought her mother might soon need to move into an assisted living facility, or a nursing home. Turns out, what Midge needed were better independent living skills, and a visit from Caremor, Inc.

The mobility experts from Caremor made a home visit to Midge’s Michigan home, on a day that Sue could also be present. They performed a thorough evaluation of her home and pointed out ways to improve safety and navigation. Caremor also discussed independent living skills that were specific to Midge’s environment.

The Caremor team fit Midge with a Rollator to help her steady herself while walking, they widened the bathroom doorway for easy access (even with her Rollator), smoothed out bumpy thresholds so she wouldn’t trip, and installed grab bars in the bathroom. The simple addition of the right Rollator, coupled with some barrier free living adaptations, bought Midge extra years in her home that she might not have had otherwise.

With her new Rollator, and her independent living skills learned from the Caremor folks, Midge feels greater confidence while in her home. Meanwhile, Sue, can now enjoy coming to see her mother, without the excessive worry of leaving her alone between visits.

Samuel Wilkins

Learning from his neighbor’s mistakes, Samuel called Caremor, Inc. for his Power Scooter delivery, assembly and maintenance.

Samuel Wilkins has been a friend and neighbor to Jim for nearly 40 years. That’s how he knew Jim had purchased a power scooter from a television commercial ad, and they were both excited for the delivery.

Both Samuel and Jim were surprised when it landed on Jim’s porch – in a box. Samuel was making his way over to Jim’s home when he heard Jim ask the deliverer if “the thing was assembled.”  It was not assembled. Now, both Samuel and Jim have done their share of mechanical assembly through the years, and normally didn’t shy away from a challenge – but they also did not want to damage the electronic component, or negate the warranty. So the power scooter sat in a box for several weeks until Jim’s son came into town.

Learning from Jim’s experience, Samuel called Caremor, Inc., who came right to the house and made suggestions on the power scooter that would best fit Samuel’s lifestyle and environment. Caremor helped file the Medicare paperwork too. When it came in, Caremor not only delivered the power scooter, but they also assembled it and gave Samuel “driving lessons” and maintenance tips before they left. And when Caremor comes to Samuel’s to give his power scooter a tune up, they head next door and do the same for Jim.

John and Joan Hansen

Learning new independent living skills, coupled with the installation of a power lift seat in their auto, helps this couple stay active

With a dream and determination to stay in their family home, the healthy and physically active Hansens were challenged after John’s stroke in his late 60’s. He suddenly required assistance getting in and out of his vehicle, but Joan lacked the physical strength this required. However, John and Joan had been together since their teen years, overcome many life obstacles, and were not about to give up easily.

Two days after their son called Caremor, the Caremor mobility experts made a home visit to discuss independent living skills and mobility aids. They assessed John and Joan’s lifestyle and environment, and also evaluated their vehicle.  The Caremor team determined that they could fit a power lift base into the existing seating; it would come right down to John’s level and lift him securely and safely into the vehicle.

Now, while John continues to regain mobility, he and Joan enjoy their independence and travel, and will soon celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Thomas Barrell

Retired Vietnam War veteran discovers the veterans assistance that would help with home and auto adaptation and a wheelchair shower.

War veteran Thomas Barrell served proudly in Vietnam. Though injured, he had been getting by without much assistance. Unfortunately, his injuries began interfering with his mobility over time. Everyday tasks such as bathing and food preparation were becoming difficult.

Thomas attended a veteran function and became acquainted with Caremor. When he called Caremor, they came to his home for a free consultation. Thomas was amazed at the veterans assistance and benefits available to him for home adaptation, and even auto adaptation.

The mobility experts discussed independent living skills, and after a barrier-free-construction consult, installed a wheelchair shower and grab bars. The wheelchair shower alone greatly multiplied Thomas’ independent living skills. Now, Thomas can maneuver without having to struggle – his home looks great, and he is receiving veterans assistance he didn’t even know was available – assistance that will not have to be repaid.
