Specially Adapted Housing Grant Programs
A disabled veteran who has specific service-connected disabilities may be entitled to veteran benefits or home grants for the purpose of constructing an adapted home or modifying an existing home to meet their adaptive needs, usually for wheelchair accessibillity. The goal of the Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Grant Programs is to provide a barrier-free living environment.
Special Home Adaptation Grant Programs
A disabled veteran who has specific service-connected disabilities may be entitled to grant programs or veterans benefits for the purpose of modifying an existing home to meet their adaptive needs. These SHA home grants are generally used to assist veterans with mobility throughout their homes.
Home Improvements and Structural Alterations Grant Programs
Under the Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) program, a disabled veteran with service-connected disabilities or veterans with non-service-connected disabilities may receive veteran’s assistance or home grants for essential facilities needed for continuation of treatment.
Automobile and/or Special Adaptive Equipment Grant Programs
Adaptive equipment for a disabled veteran includes, but is not limited to, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seats and special equipment necessary to assist the eligible person into and out of their vehicle.
How Can You Apply?
You can apply for the SAH and SHA grants by completing VA Form 26-4555, Veterans Application in Acquiring Specially Adapted Housing or Special Home Adaptation Grant, and submitting it to your local VA regional office.
